Following a dominant victory at Atlanta, a determined Kevin Harvick entered Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as a driver on a mission.
Starting from the second spot, the 42-year-old put the spurs to his No. 4 Jimmy John’s Ford Fusion on lap two, taking the lead from pole sitter Ryan Blaney. Leading 214 of 267 laps, Harvick scored his second straight win of the 2018 season.
Harvick’s victory was special in more ways than one. In fact, it was the veteran’s 100th victory in the top-three NASCAR series, a remarkable milestone for the pride of Bakersfield, Calif.
“I think when you tag that triple-digit number to it, it really lets you realize that you've been fortunate to accomplish a lot of things and do things consistently throughout the years,” Harvick observed.
Furthermore, Harvick logged the 40th Cup win of his storied career, climbing to 18th on the all-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series wins list, tying Mark Martin, a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
“You know, I think any place you get on the list at this particular point, for me, I just kind of laugh, just because I never really thought that I would actually get to the point of putting yourself beside Mark Martin and some of the guys that are on that part of the list,” Harvick said.
On this race day, Harvick’s No. 4 Ford was not to be denied from Victory Lane at the 1.5-mile speedway. Still, that didn’t mean his car was in showroom condition. Rubber buildup from the track surface and grime found its way into the nose and splitter. However, post-race confetti adorned Harvick’s ride, marking the coronation of a hard day’s work at the track.
