I began watching NASCAR in 1996 while serving in the Marines. I was stationed in Japan and due to the time difference the Armed Forces TV Network showed the Cup races on Monday evenings. However, I did not attend my first race until 2008 at Michigan. And since then I have been able to attend races at Atlanta, Talladega, and Bristol. My goal in the next few years is to get to Indy, Charlotte, and Daytona. I began collecting shortly after my discharge from the military and would grab a car here or there. I even ended up selling my entire collection in 2010, but regretted it almost immediately. When Jeff Gordon announced his retirement in 2015 I caught the bug again and collecting became more of an obsession, or as my wife would put it, an addiction. I added 26 cars to my collection in 2015 alone, all of which are Jeff Gordon. I added Jimmie Johnson in 2017 and I am proud to own his Homestead Race Win and the Championship cars from 2016. Being that I was still ‘new’ to the die-cast world I begun collecting the ARC versions, but in early 2019 I joined the Lionel Forum and met some great people and I learned a lot from the group and would highly recommend anyone starting out or considering collecting to join the forum. So with my improved knowledge I added Chase Elliott and begun collecting his Elites as well as Raced Win elites. 2020 has seen my collection double as I added Martin Truex Jr, Kevin Harvick, & William Byron to the mix. For me, as may be the case for many collectors, the thrill of the search is what I enjoy most. Searching for that elusive car that is hard is the best part of the hobby. Every collector has their ‘holy grail’ that they look for and hope to one day add them to the collection. For me those are Jeff Gordon’s 2015 Martinsville Raced Win Elite and 2014 Pepsi Real Big Summer cars. They are very sought after and hard to find. In the end, every time I see a Lionel Racing package sitting on my porch, and even though I know what is in the box, I still feel like that 5 year old on Christmas morning opening presents. Thank you to Lionel Racing and the entire staff for all they do and I cannot wait until the next one arrives. I look forward to many more years of collecting.
